Course Overview

In this course, Perfecting the Assessment: Force Based Muscle Tests, Derrick McBride presents the global concept of applying force to muscles for the diagnosis of orthopedic injuries and local stagnation patterns. Specific examples will be used to show the versatility of the concept presented. Some examples of tests include:(1) Differentiating Hip Abductors such as Gluteus Medius. Gluteus Minimus, and Tensor Fascia Latae (2) Differentiating Hip Adductors such as Adductor Longus, Adductor Magnus, and Gracilis (3) Trunk Stabilizers. At the end of the course, the students will feel comfortable with multiple ways of applying compressive forces to anatomical tissues for more specific diagnoses of local stagnation patterns.

Course Objectives

  • Understand the principle of applying force to muscles for diagnosis of local stagnation.
  • Understand how specific angles when applying force to muscles help differentiate muscle involvement.
  • Understand the possible positive tests associated with muscle testing.
  • Be able to utilize specific examples in the clinic right way.
  • Be able to apply the broader concept to other areas that arent specifically shown.

Course Outline

0 hrs - 30 minIntroduction to performing muscle testing. Clinical context and history of muscle testing is covered.

30 min - 1.5 hrsSpecific muscle tests showing pain and noticable weakness.

1.5 hrs - 2.5 hrsSpecific muscle tests showing relative weakness, delayed muscle firing, and teasing out pain in specific fibers.

2.5 hrs - 3 hrsSpecifit muscle and orthopedic tests to show the utilization of multiple types of test to solidfy and diagnosis.
